Study suggests the obvious

without comments

Sometimes I think science (or some people in the field) waste time and money with nonsense studies that seem to be more common sense or in this case: who the heck cares. Study suggests that the store name on a prescription medicine bottle is larger than the instructions. The warning print is smaller yet. Really?

Serotonin locust gangs

with one comment

Interesting research has come out citing a link between the brain chemical serotonin and forming locustgangs.  Malcolm Burrows states that giving the locust serotonin transforms them within a couple of hours. The creature changes color and then searches out other locusts accumulating gangs of millions. This research is being regarded as a breakthrough in sorts as a way to stop the formation of these destructive gangs. Should we be messing with nature in this way? What is the purpose of these gangs? Changing the patterns of nature hasn’t proved beneficial in the past so we had better take a closer look at the reason these insects get together in the first place.

Three Biological Pigments: Chlorophyll, Retinal, Melanin

without comments

Biological pigments in living organisms are used to capture energy from photons, that then go on to perform a specific task.

Chlorophyll, Retinal, and Melanin all absorb certain wavelengths of light and are produced in biosynthetic pathways.

Chlorophyll is found in plant cells and is used to absorb photons that creates energy and drives photosynthesis. Retinal is found in the eye and is used in visual photoreception. Melanin is found in skin, hair, and eye color; it absorbs ultraviolet radiation to protect DNA.
